Color Me Rad Glasgow/Livingston

We had a fantastic turn out of supporters at the recent Color Me Rad run on Saturday 23rd of August 2014 at the Glasgow/Livingston run!

We are very grateful to be selected as the official charity partner for this year's run, a big thanks to all the runners, organisers, volunteers and supporters for making this such a great event!

The gallery with all the photos is located here.

Prof. Dan Young - Honorary President

We were all shocked and saddened to hear that Dan Young passed away on Sunday after a long illness. The Association owes a huge debt to Dan over many years. He will be greatly missed by his very special family at the Scottish Spina Bifida Association.

Our thoughts are with Dan's family at this sad time.

Online sponsorship still a great way for supporters to generate funds

Despite yesterday's news regarding the CharityGiving website, which has been now been suspended by the Charity Commission, we wanted to reassure all our supporters that the online donations sites which the Scottish Spina Bifida Association is affiliated to (Justgiving.com, workwithus.org, virginmoneygiving and Charity Choice) have not been affected and they assure us, won't be affected.

If you have access to the web, creating an online sponsorship page is still the easiest way to raise money quickly and easily, whilst building up support for your chosen special activity.

Friends and family are able to donate online with a credit or debit card - so no more running around with paper sponsorship forms, or chasing cheques and cash after your event. By using a site like Virgin Money Giving they will also claim gift aid for you, so your chosen charity, where applicable, will receive an extra 25p per £1 donation at no extra cost to you or your sponsors.

By using our Justgiving service you also have the option to give out a special text code and people can donate directly through their mobile phones.

Not just for a sponsored event - You can also set up pages to celebrate a special birthday, anniversary or occasion in your life.

If you are thinking of taking part in a sponsored activity for the Scottish Spina Bifida Association and would like more information on launching your own personalised online page please call us on 01236 794508, email or click HERE

2 New Projects Provide Important Support for Young People and Carers

2 New Projects just launching with the Scottish Spina Bifida Association are providing important support for young people and carers.

Positive Connections (funded by The Big Lottery Young Start Fund) will enable young people aged 8-25 years with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus in Lanarkshire and surrounding areas to access social opportunities through monthly groups and activities at the Association’s purpose built centre in Cumbernauld.

This project aims to:

  • Enable children and young people to gain more confidence and skills.
  • Enable children and young people to have better physical, mental and emotional health.

For further details please click HERE or call Jo Milligan on 01236 794500.

Breakaway (funded by Shared Care Scotland) provides flexible respite for carers of young people aged 12-16 years who are affected by Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus. The Breakaway Project aims to provide an opportunity for carers to have a break from their caring role. At the same time, the young person you care for will also have the opportunity to receive support to participate in a range of activities within the home or local community.

Carers get a break from their caring role, have the opportunity to develop hobbies and interests or just have the opportunity to socialise and feel less isolated.

For more information on the Breakaway project please click HERE or call Melanie Cook on 01236 794500.

SSBA - A Positive Future Ahead

Changes at the Scottish Spina Bifida Association (SSBA)

A Positive Future Ahead

Over recent months there have been significant changes to staffing within SSBA. This has been partly due to the impact of the recession, where it has become increasingly difficult to raise enough money to continue some of the core services we have enjoyed over the years, and partly as staff have moved onto new posts.

In March of this year Anne Kane, our Groupwork and Financial Support Co-ordinator left to enjoy early retirement and in May of this year Anne Metcalfe left to take up a new post in Edinburgh.

This has meant that the remaining key staff in Direct Services, Lisa Henderson (Senior Specialist Nurse), Sophie Teear (North of Scotland Co-ordinator) and Mary Anne McCafferty (SEA Change Co-ordinator) have been ably taking on some of the additional work in dealing with your general enquiries, in addition to their usual roles.

Because of these difficult financial times we are determined to look at ways of developing additional services for children, young people and adults throughout Scotland who depend on our support. We have listened to your feedback and are responding to the needs you have identified by providing important projects to improve independence and social skills and, most importantly, to improve the lives of those living with the conditions through health awareness, support and training.
