Healthy living project

A new Healthy Living Project has commenced staffed by a full time Senior Specialist Nurse and volunteer Nursing Staff. The project has developed from the success of the Pilot Project "A Clinic Designed with me in Mind"  in 2007.

The project has expanded on the existing annual healthcheck offered to adults with spina bifida or hydrocephalus and develops a wide range of self management strategies to support all those living with spina bifida or hydrocephalus.
The health checks we offer are simple, very effective and confidential and are carried out in our fully equipped treatment room at our National Centre in Cumbernauld. Often by carrying these out, any potential problems can be picked up and dealt with to prevent more serious health problems developing.

These checks include:

Temperature, pulse, blood pressure, urinalysis, weight, head circumferenceAdvice on skin care, diet and continence managementRelaxation and stress management techniquesThe opportunity to discuss any issues that may be worrying you in modern, relaxed surroundings

Part of the health check is to assess emotional wellbeing. Many adults who are living with a long term health condition can feel isolated or low in mood and are disinclined to go out or be involved in any social activities.

If you are interested in having a health check, the first step is to contact our Specialist Nurse and an appointment will be arranged. A letter confirming this will then be sent to you along with a health check questionnaire to be returned prior to your appointment. A urine sample bottle will also be enclosed which enables you to bring a urine sample to the clinic with you.
On arrival at the clinic you will meet with the nurse on your own or with a family member if you prefer. Your healthcheck questionnaire will be discussed with you and health checks carried out. The results will be recorded and sent to your GP.

There is also the opportunity to meet with one of the Family Support Workers  who can offer advice and support on a range of issues such as benefits, housing, adaptations, employment and further education.

For further information or to make an appointment for a health check service, contact the Senior Specialist Nurse on 01236 794500.
