Swine Flu and Spina Bifida

Swine Flu and Spina Bifida - Last updated 23 October 2009

You may be particularly worried about Swine Flu because you or someone you know has spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus.

From what we know at the moment unless you already have a weakened respiratory or immune system, people with spina bifida run no greater risk of contracting the virus.

However if you have diabetes mellitus or a chronic neurological, lung, heart kidney or liver disease then you would be prioritised for vaccination.

The current advice is that if you currently get the seasonal 'Flu Jab' annually then you should automatically be called by your local GP soon to offer you a swine flu vaccination. Please note that the Seasonal 'Flu Jab' does NOT protect you from swine flu, so you need an additional jab.

All pregnant women will also be targeted as a priority, as will anyone who lives in the same house as someone whose immune system is compromised by disease or treatment (for instance someone who is receiving treatment for cancer)

Vaccination

The Scottish Government have issued general advice recently regarding certain groups who will be offered the vaccine as a priority over the next few weeks.

Remember you should always seek advice from your GP or other health care professional as to whether or not a vaccination is recommended for you as an individual, but it is good to have as much information as possible so you can discuss the issues you have before you make your decision.

General Advice.

You should be aware of the Scottish Government's "Catch it, Bin it, Kill it," campaign which gives helpful information for everyone on Hand Hygiene and how to reduce the spread of infection.

The virus likes to linger on hard surfaces like worktops, handles, remote controls, computer keyboards and the like, so it is important to keep them clean and wipe them regularly.

Symptoms

For most people swine flu will be mild. It comes on quickly and generally lasts for about a week. It causes fever, tiredness cough and sore throat. Other symptoms include headache, aching muscles chills, sneezing, a running nose, loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea.
