Family Support & Advocacy Project

Since May 1999 the Scottish Spina Bifida Association has worked in conjunction with the Craighalbert Centre (The Scottish Centre for Children with Motor Impairment) in Cumbernauld to provide a Family Support and Advocacy Service for children in Scotland with a motor impairment such as cerebral palsy, or other allied disorders.

The service, which uses the Scottish Spina Bifida Association's Family Support Service model as a basis for providing a Family Support Service is based at the Craighalbert Centre and the role of the family support worker is to offer support to children and young people with motor impairment or allied disorders and their families and carers.

The project offers an independent service which aims to provide information to parents, support parents in their effort to secure appropriate services for their children and to help parents ensure their views and feelings are considered when important decisions are being made regarding their child's welfare.

The service exists to support families and the decisions they make.  It has been set up to offer families unbiased and professional support and to encourage them to look at all relevant services available to enable them to make informed choices, prior to making decisions about their and their children's lives.  The overall aim of the project is to empower families to become efficient self-advocates whilst still providing support and back-up as necessary.
